HST Fever

Inspired by two of Rita‘s quilts, along with the pinwheels we’ve been making for my year-long Your First (Modern) Quilt class, I’ve been on a half-square triangle tear.  These will go together into a gift quilt–I know, I’m really making something for someone who doesn’t live with me.  This will be only the second quilt I’ve ever made to give away to someone outside this house, so, yeah, kinda huge for me.

Then I saw that Ashley has been making HSTs, too.  Maybe it’s a fever or a virus or something?  Like that enterovirus the baby picked up and the pediatrician said it came from the grocery store shopping cart?  Like that, but with quilting.  I think it’s totally possible.

Trimming my little heart out–all 168 squares!–and finishing up the piecing this week.  And then doing the same all over again, since this quilt will have a twin.  But in a cool way, I promise.  Along with shooting some video, emailing new students, prepping samples, putting together a new tutorial for you (whee!) and hoping hoping hoping we were successful in our bid for the house we fell in love with last weekend.  (Those are all me, not the twin quilt.  Silly.)  Big week!

I don’t know if I ever shared with you, but your maternal great-grandmother used to piece just such HST quilts. She was, first, a really talented sewer and made me a bunch of gathered skirts in 6th grade and also an exquisite collection of doll clothes for my Madame Alexander 8″ dolls. The tiniest buttons, the itsy-bitsy-est lace trims, and all sewn by hand.

She had some hook-up to scraps from a shirt factory and I remember those prints quite vividly. She would cut them into HSTs and also gave some to my OTHER grandmother.
