I was a little shocked this past week when I had nearly a whole class of my Intro Sewing students bond deeply in the first five minutes about their dislike of needing to have every single pair of pants altered–not because they don’t like it, but because I (at 5′ 5″ and short waisted, like my grandmother Miriam) have not had this experience. Pants are often too long on me, but with my new-found love of wearing heels, I’ve even got a solution for that.
So I was a both surprised and envious to hear SO MANY of my students say they take each pair of pants they purchase over to the alterations shop and fork over their $30 to get them hemmed or let out. No wonder they get frustrated in the dressing room!
We’ve got the solution for you this week: guest instructor Marilu Poole, who teaches our hand-sewing and couture techniques classes, is offering her Hemming, Repairs and Alterations workshop this Wednesday night! She’ll cover hemming jeans, letting out pants, using the invisible hem stitch on your sewing machine, hemming by hand, and correctly sewing on a button, plus basic techniques for taking in or letting out the waistband on pants and skirts. All essential skills, and all taught by someone with more than 40 years’ experience sewing. I’m super bummed I can’t be there, but you’re in GREAT hands with Marilu, and you’ll go home with plenty of hands-on experience and a written guide for working on your own later.
Class meets Wednesday, November 11 from 7-10 pm at Whipstitch. Register online or email with questions, and have fun hemming!
The Magic Onions
November 10, 2009 at 6:37 pmHi, I read in a comment of yours that you did your thesis on acorn use!!! That amazes me… I'm an acorn nut too and would love to know a little of this history. I'm hoping you'll share some of the uses with me. Blessings and magic.
