Rounding out this #MeMadeMay in my #JunegrassPull

Rounding out this #MeMadeMay in my #JunegrassPullover (pattern + yarn from @fancytigercrafts) learning to fly fish before our family trip to Yellowstone National Park next month. Apparently I mastered the cast? But I still didn’t catch anything. The children and my husband pulled up blue gill and brim like they were going out of style.

Then we headed to the land we’re hoping to use as a family campground this summer, where we pitched tents on what could only very loosely be called a primitive “site,” and hiked our way up the tiny creek, and 10-year-old me hyperventilated thinking of all the imaginings she would have had about fairies, and castles, and witches, and magic. A perfect holiday weekend. #MeMadeMay2021

The light in this room is so unreal this time of day. We had three new windows cut into the wall that faces into the trees, and now the whole place feels like a treehouse with this amazing Golden Hour glow in the afternoons. I can’t wait for them to paint the trim so we can move our furniture in and spend the summer gazing out the French doors. 😍 That black wall is set to be wrapped in stained slats of cherry wood to reference the stair railing we installed three years ago, and I may never leave this room again. Especially between the hours of 445 and 615 pm. ☀️

Wearing another #FlorenceKimono (read: drop-sleeve wrap, see my previous post) by @caroline.hulse made up in this absurdly soft and floaty cotton lawn from local fabric shop @gailkfabrics. Keeps my upper arms warm without making me sweat, can I get a shout out from my peri-monopausal peeps?? Because WTH, y’all. It can last up to THIRTEEN YEARS?? Before it even STARTS??

First day of summer vacation! Hair: cut. Legs: shaved. Toes: painted. So where else would I be other than on the floor of our new closet?

We thought converting the smallest bedroom into a larger walk-in closet would be a “quickie” project and I don’t have to tell you that means it took 3x longer than expected while we slept in the basement with no doors or walls and all our personal belongings surrounding us on ikea racks. But!! It’s nearly finished!! And it will be SO WORTH THE WAIT. Rug? Check. Soothing spa-like wall paint? Check. Oceans of natural light? Check! (I didn’t ask the guys installing the windows what they thought of me wanting to lie down and make carpet angels in an otherwise empty room, but it’s probably not the weirdest thing they’ve seen the past nine weeks, TBH.)

Top is this yummy sheer @theory__ “sweater” thing purchased secondhand via @poshmark, over a basic black camisole. Cloggy platform sandals are @dansko and I’ve worn them touristing everywhere from Paris to Cairo and will never ever ever travel without them ever again, they seriously go with everything. #MeMadeMay #MeMadeMay2021 #DreamCloset

People!! Our last child finished her last day of elementary school, and I guess we just don’t go there anymore?!?! WEIRDEST FEELING. Celebrated by taking her for her very first mani/pedi, at her request, because colors are fun.

I had a hair appointment scheduled for tomorrow th

I had a hair appointment scheduled for tomorrow that I made three months ago, because that is how one makes a hair appointment in any reasonable manner. And then we learned that it just happened to be set for a scant 30 minutes after the graduation ceremony for our fifth grader, whose very last day of elementary school is tomorrow. And I thought, “OK, I can make this work, it’s a short ceremony outside, I’ll go & watch and then burn rubber out of the parking lot and she can ride home with a friend and it’ll be fine!” Because rescheduling meant a hair appointment in...late July. 😬 And I asked her if that would make her feel overlooked, and she said no, I just want you to kiss me at the end ❤️ and I figured, “ok cool!”—for exactly 60 minutes, and then I called and cancelled that appointment, because I don’t want to be a monster. IT’S HAIR, and your baby only finishes elementary school once, and after the Weirdest School Year In Modern History, I want to give it some gravitas that doesn’t involve me leaping into my car for a hair cut.

But then!! Jubilee!! A cancellation!! An appointment came available for TODAY and do I want it?!? Yes!! Even if that means I’m still in my workout clothes at 6 pm because I never got around to getting dressed.
.
All this to say that as I walk around the block in the @hanes sweatshirt to which I sewed @nationalparkgeek patches three years ago, the closest thing to handmade I wore today, I was thinking two things: (1) handmade sneaks into our lives in little ways, sometimes ways we overlook because they don’t seem like a Big Deal, so if maybe you’re reading this and have thought you need to Sew More Things, it’s possible you just haven’t given yourself credit for how many SMALL projects you’ve done; and (2) it’s the small things that add up to Big Things, whether it’s cancelling an appointment so you can stand for 30 minutes and applaud, or it’s a collection of small projects that represent the idea that making things by hand is an investment that can fit into any life on any scale, in whatever way we invite it, in whatever way serves us best.

Thus concludes today’s #MeMadeMay metaphor. At ease, y’all.

I still love this dress. Even though it’s two si

I still love this dress. Even though it’s two sizes too big. The cotton lawn is so soft, and the sleeves + collar feel so put together, but effortless. I tried it with a belt today and I actually love the effect—this is a belt I bought over a decade ago and rarely wear, but can’t seem to let go of, and combined with the fabric, I’m digging the dress on a whole new level. So maybe that’s what it takes to evaluate “keep or release?” of my handmades: a little dress up, a little styling, a little experimentation. Bonus: it looks amazing with a pair of kicky faux-animal-skin platform heels.

Swipe to see where I’m hiding the extra fabric, for now: belted, I’m taking out approximately 3” at the waist, and mostly it’s distributed around the circumference under the belt. It tends to reveal itself at the back, though, which makes this an unsustainable solution for regular life. Alternate option: I can keep this dress as-is and wear it for more active endeavors, like beach visits and bike rides, like @christinehaynes does!

I’ve taken so many photos of my own face this #MeMadeMay that all I see is wild eyes 👀 anymore. And I’ve taken so many photos of my handmades that I see how many of them are my favorite things to wear! Unexpected side-effect of #MeMadeMay2021: a fresh pair of eyes as I look at what I’m giving shelf space (literally and metaphorically, to stretch a theme).

The make so nice I sewed it twice! I made this exact #TovaTop—same fabric, same size—as a shop sample when I owned the Whipstitch retail store, back in 2012? Maybe? I gave it away, and immediately regretted that decision, what was I thinking? So I made it again, for me!! This top gets a HARD workout every year, and I’ve got a couple planned in babywale corduroy for this fall so that it can be an all-season style.
