With everything we’re doing to get moved in and get the kitchen ready for six people to abuse it relentlessly for the next twenty years, I haven’t spent much time in my studio. In fact, I have spent NO time in my studio. I don’t really have one yet:
So far, this is about how much progress I’ve made. The boxes are in, the tables are in, most of it is still boxed or shrinkwrapped. Veeery little sewing getting done so far–just handwork (and the perennial I-just-got-new-fabric-oooh-look-how-pretty-it-is). I meant to get the whole studio organized today, but as I type this, there are men tearing out the (super attractive) suspended ceiling, which means that there is even more plastic on top of my boxes than usual.
Don’t you love the light fixture? The previous owner had his pool table right here. His loss, my gain! Oh, wait: we’ll be losing this when the ceiling comes down. Dagnabbit, I’m so disappointed.
So the moving in will be delayed another day, which is probably OK. It means I can focus on getting my bedroom unpacked and congratulating myself that the wall color I thought was so perfect and then put all over the master bedroom walls and realized I didn’t like AT ALL until we got our furniture and linens in and I saw that it’s actually really lovely, which now makes me want to super unpack. Whew. Dodged a bullet on that one.
In the future though, I have this to look forward to. Not the filth, just the space: this is my FUTURE STUDIO. This is the other side of the wall from the photos above, the unfinished side of our partially “finished” basement. It’s beyond dirty, since the previous owner stored piles of actual junk here for a good portion of the 40+ years he owned this house, but that’s all gone and we’ve got plans to finish this area out. (Don’t worry, by “we” I mean a contractor; I DIY but not to this degree.) I’m both excited and in disbelief that my husband is willing to let me have all this space, and have already made little sketches and floor plans for where everything will go–stay tuned!

January 5, 2012 at 5:49 pmThis is going to be a fabulous studio! I am so excited for you. We have been moving around for several years due to hubby’s job relocation and I am dreaming of a permanent space bigger than a little closet! You must be in HOG HEAVEN!!! Can’t wait to see more photos.

January 6, 2012 at 3:44 pmThere’s a very lovely and inspiring magazine called “Where Women Create”, it comes out every other month. You might find some ideas for your new studio. Heck when you’re finished they may be tapping you on the shoulder for a photo shoot. Their sister publication “Where Women Cook” just did a beautiful article and shoot on your neighbor Anne Quatrano of Bacchanalia & Star Provisions.

January 12, 2012 at 12:25 pmWe had it pressure-washed since this photo was taken, and it is really nice down there–much more so than even we expected. Lots of good light, very exciting. Will be a few months, for sure, before we’re in a place where we can have the contractor come in, but am already beginning to get hyped!!
